JACKSONVILLE -- They call themselves diehard fans, with good reason.

They started arriving Friday at RV City outside EverBank Field, even though the gates didn't open until Wednesday and the Florida-Georgia game is played Saturday. The struggles of both schools' football teams didn't deter fans from making an annual pilgrimage that helped give the game its "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" nickname.

"These people are diehards," said Patty Wooten, 60, who has been parking there for 15 years. "It doesn't matter if they're winning or losing."

Yet the presence of several empty spots in the usually packed lot suggested that something was different from previous years. Some fans conceded the Gators' three-game losing streak and Bulldogs' four losses on the season were a factor. Others put the blame squarely on the economy.

"I think it's a little of both," said Rick Sharp, 47, of Jacksonville.

But Sharp was undeterred. He's one of about 50 people in 11 motor homes who return annually to the same area in the lot, which they've dubbed Alligator Alley.
"The diehards - we're here every year," he said.
