Little Known Black History Fact: Dean Smith

Dean Smith, the legendary coach of the University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball team, has died at age 83.

While Smith’s basketball accomplishments are well known, new light has been shed on his fight for racial equality in sports and life. Smith was urged by his pastor to recruit an African-American player, this during the swelling heights of the Civil Rights Movement and statewide resistance to racial equality in the Deep South. Smith needed to recruit a player that could handle UNC’s rigid coursework and deal with the racism and threats that was sure to come.

New York player Charles “Charlie” Scott became that recruit. Smith became an advocate for Black players and students. In 1964, Smith desegregated a lunch counter in North Carolina by sitting and eating lunch with a Black theology student. Smith was beloved for protecting his Black players as well as he could. Smith also encouraged his players to complete their education and top stars like Michael Jordan and Vince Carter returned to complete their degrees after leaving early for the NBA. In fact, Smith has seen a reported 96 percent graduation rate among his former players.

Feburary is Black History Month!

Little Known Black History Fact: Charlie Sifford

Sifford, the first Black golfer to play on the once all-white PGA Tour, died this past Tuesday. He was 92. Sifford was born June 2, 1922 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Sifford worked as a golf caddy as a teen before picking up the sport. Because the PGA Of America remained a whites-only organization, Black golfers organized their own tournaments in the ’30’s and ’40’s.

Black golfers such as Pete Brown, Lee Elder, Ann Gregory, Althea Gibson and Tiger Woods all owe their careers to golf pioneer Charlie Sifford.

A Pelican...Beats A Hawk?

The inevitable has happened.  The Atlanta Hawks lost last night...to the New Orleans Pelicans. The streak is over.

A Hawk...lost to a ...Pelican.

Really?

Let's start another streak...ok?

Warren Sapp...Is A...Stupid..."Sap"

When you are as big...and black...as Warren Sapp?   Your best bet is to keep a low profile.

Obvious...this loud talking...braggadocios...Negro...is just plain stupid.  At the Super Bowl no less.

It appears our Mr. Sapp had to get his "groove" on (at 7am) we might add.   And...he was hassling the alleged "call girls" over the price!  And...allegedly...got physical.

Too stupid...Warren.   You are not some Joe Smoe.  You're on the flagship NFL Network!  You are at the Super Bowl!

You think TMZ....is not in town?

Never been a Sapp fan.   Too loud...too bullying...But I did think he had better sense!

From The Young, Black &  Fabulous (YBF):

BUSTED: NFL Analyst Warren Sapp ARRESTED For Allegedly Soliciting A Prostitute & Assault Allegations + NFL Network Reportedly FIRES Him!

In foolish activities news….Former NFL star Warren Sapp has been busted for allegedly soliciting a prostitute and is being accused of assault out in Arizona during the Super Bowl festivities. And it looks like THIS TIME it cost him his job as an analyst on the NFL Network. Deets inside....

5 Super Thoughts...on a Super Game

University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, Arizona
New England

Seattle
Seahawks
(14-5)

 Well...well...well.  A super game for a SuperBowl!

Here is 5 of our thoughts:

#1.   Love them or hate them...The Patriots of New England...are the best team these eyes have seen in our life time.

#2.  The singing of the National Anthem and the "fly-by" ....was simply...awesome!

#3.  Let's get the Grambling State Marching Band ...back for the half-time entertainment.  Enough already of these MTV-Techno concerts.

#4.  The only commercial that moved me?   The Brady Bunch...Snickers...with that Mexican Actor.

#5.  A game of inches....Tell me...truthfully....When Seattle completed that miraculous pass in the final minute....You and all watching....just knew the Sea Hawks were going to win!   They did not!  Inches short....then...THE...interception!
